Mold Prevention
Delayed or insufficient maintenance is associated with moisture problems leading to mold.
To prevent mold growth the following actions are recommended:
- Identify and report deficient plumbing and leaks in the building structure as soon as possible
- Watch for condensation, wet spots and/or musty odors. Correct moisture problems as soon as they are detected
- Prevent moisture due to condensation by increasing surface temperature or reducing the moisture level in the air (humidity)
- Keep heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) drip pans clean, flowing properly and unobstructed
- Vent moisture-generating appliances, such as dryers, to the outside where possible
- Perform regular building/HVAC inspections and maintenance as scheduled
- Clean and dry-out wet or damp areas within 48 hours
- Do not allow foundations to remain saturated. Provide drainage and slope the ground away from the foundation.
